  1. ਝਝਾ ਉਰਝਿ ਸੁਰਝਿ ਨਹੀ ਜਾਨਾ ॥

    The person, who only knows how to entangle in useless controversies but has not yet learnt to get out of these, wastes all his life in doubts and controversies.

  2. ਰਹਿਓ ਝਝਕਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਪਰਵਾਨਾ ॥

    Such a person is not accepted in God’s court.

  3. ਕਤ ਝਖਿ ਝਖਿ ਅਉਰਨ ਸਮਝਾਵਾ ॥

    What good is to indulge in arguments trying to convince others?

  4. ਝਗਰੁ ਕੀਏ ਝਗਰਉ ਹੀ ਪਾਵਾ ॥੧੫॥

    Stirring up arguments, we involve ourselves in more conflicts.

  5. ਞੰਞਾ ਨਿਕਟਿ ਜੁ ਘਟ ਰਹਿਓ ਦੂਰਿ ਕਹਾ ਤਜਿ ਜਾਇ ॥

    God dwells near you, deep within your heart, why do you leave Him and go far away?

  6. ਜਾ ਕਾਰਣਿ ਜਗੁ ਢੂਢਿਅਉ ਨੇਰਉ ਪਾਇਅਉ ਤਾਹਿ ॥੧੬॥

    For whom I searched the entire world, Him I have found within myself.

  7. ਟਟਾ ਬਿਕਟ ਘਾਟ ਘਟ ਮਾਹੀ ॥

    The path to the shore leading to divine abode is very treacherous but it is located within the heart itself.

  8. ਖੋਲਿ ਕਪਾਟ ਮਹਲਿ ਕਿ ਨ ਜਾਹੀ ॥

    Opening the doors of your heart, why don’t you go to God’s presence?

  9. ਦੇਖਿ ਅਟਲ ਟਲਿ ਕਤਹਿ ਨ ਜਾਵਾ ॥

    One who has realized the eternal God, doesn’t fall in doubts and go elsewhere,

  10. ਰਹੈ ਲਪਟਿ ਘਟ ਪਰਚਉ ਪਾਵਾ ॥੧੭॥

    with love for God in his heart he remains attuned to Him.

  11. ਠਠਾ ਇਹੈ ਦੂਰਿ ਠਗ ਨੀਰਾ ॥

    This Maya is a mirage like the far away appearance of false water in a desert.

  12. ਨੀਠਿ ਨੀਠਿ ਮਨੁ ਕੀਆ ਧੀਰਾ ॥

    That cheater (Maya) has cheated and devoured the entire world,

  13. ਜਿਨਿ ਠਗਿ ਠਗਿਆ ਸਗਲ ਜਗੁ ਖਾਵਾ ॥

    I have cheated that cheater and my mind is now at peace.

  14. ਸੋ ਠਗੁ ਠਗਿਆ ਠਉਰ ਮਨੁ ਆਵਾ ॥੧੮॥

    When the revered fear of God wells up in one’s mind then the worldly fears departs.

  15. ਡਡਾ ਡਰ ਉਪਜੇ ਡਰੁ ਜਾਈ ॥

    And the worldly fear gets absorbed in the revered fear of God.

  16. ਤਾ ਡਰ ਮਹਿ ਡਰੁ ਰਹਿਆ ਸਮਾਈ ॥

    But if one does not have the revered fear of God then other worldly fears cling to him.

  17. ਜਉ ਡਰ ਡਰੈ ਤ ਫਿਰਿ ਡਰੁ ਲਾਗੈ ॥

    When one enshrines God’s fear in the heart and becomes fearless then the worldly fears of his mind run away.

  18. ਨਿਡਰ ਹੂਆ ਡਰੁ ਉਰ ਹੋਇ ਭਾਗੈ ॥੧੯॥

    When one enshrines God’s fear in the heart and becomes fearless then the worldly fears of his mind run away.

  19. ਢਢਾ ਢਿਗ ਢੂਢਹਿ ਕਤ ਆਨਾ ॥

    God is near you, why are you searching Him anywhere else?

  20. ਢੂਢਤ ਹੀ ਢਹਿ ਗਏ ਪਰਾਨਾ ॥

    Searching for Him like this the breath of life runs out.

  21. ਚੜਿ ਸੁਮੇਰਿ ਢੂਢਿ ਜਬ ਆਵਾ ॥

    When one returns to himself after scaling the Sumer mountain and failing to find God there, one finds God within the body, the fort which God Himself made.

  22. ਜਿਹ ਗੜੁ ਗੜਿਓ ਸੁ ਗੜ ਮਹਿ ਪਾਵਾ ॥੨੦॥

    The one who is engaged in war with one’s own vices and acquires the determination to control his vices, he neither yields nor compromises with these evil impulses.

  23. ਣਾਣਾ ਰਣਿ ਰੂਤਉ ਨਰ ਨੇਹੀ ਕਰੈ ॥

    NANNA: The warrior who fights on the battle-field should keep up and press on.

  24. ਨਾ ਨਿਵੈ ਨਾ ਫੁਨਿ ਸੰਚਰੈ ॥

    The one who is engaged in war with one’s own vices and acquires the determination to control his vices, he neither yields nor compromises with these evil impulses.

  25. ਧੰਨਿ ਜਨਮੁ ਤਾਹੀ ਕੋ ਗਣੈ ॥

    Such a person’s advent in this world is considered blessed,

  26. ਮਾਰੈ ਏਕਹਿ ਤਜਿ ਜਾਇ ਘਣੈ ॥੨੧॥

    because he conquers his mind and renounces all that evils.

  27. ਤਤਾ ਅਤਰ ਤਰਿਓ ਨਹ ਜਾਈ ॥

    This world is like an ocean that one cannot swim across, because one’s body remains absorbed in the pleasures of the sensory organs.

  28. ਤਨ ਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣ ਮਹਿ ਰਹਿਓ ਸਮਾਈ ॥

    But when the allurements of the sensory organs are controlled by the mind, then the human soul merges in the supreme Soul and one realizes God.

  29. ਜਉ ਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣ ਤਨ ਮਾਹਿ ਸਮਾਵਾ ॥

    But when the allurements of the sensory organs are controlled by the mind,

  30. ਤਉ ਤਤਹਿ ਤਤ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਸਚੁ ਪਾਵਾ ॥੨੨॥

    then the human soul merges in the supreme Soul and one realizes God.

  31. ਥਥਾ ਅਥਾਹ ਥਾਹ ਨਹੀ ਪਾਵਾ ॥

    Human mind can’t fathom the unfathomable God,

  32. ਓਹੁ ਅਥਾਹ ਇਹੁ ਥਿਰੁ ਨ ਰਹਾਵਾ ॥

    because that God is fathomless and the human mind doesn’t remain steady in one place.

  33. ਥੋੜੈ ਥਲਿ ਥਾਨਕ ਆਰੰਭੈ ॥

    During the short span of life one gets involved in so many ambitions;

  34. ਬਿਨੁ ਹੀ ਥਾਭਹ ਮੰਦਿਰੁ ਥੰਭੈ ॥੨੩॥

    it is like one starts to build many cities on a little bit of allotted land.

  35. ਦਦਾ ਦੇਖਿ ਜੁ ਬਿਨਸਨਹਾਰਾ ॥

    whatever is visible with the eyes is perishable, therefore, always remember Him whom you cannot see with these eyes.

  36. ਜਸ ਅਦੇਖਿ ਤਸ ਰਾਖਿ ਬਿਚਾਰਾ ॥

    Without the capital of Naam all his worldly plans are of no use;

  37. ਦਸਵੈ ਦੁਆਰਿ ਕੁੰਚੀ ਜਬ ਦੀਜੈ ॥

    it is like building a mansion without any pillars.

  38. ਤਉ ਦਇਆਲ ਕੋ ਦਰਸਨੁ ਕੀਜੈ ॥੨੪॥

    then the Blessed Vision of the Merciful Lord's Darshan is seen. ||24||

  39. ਧਧਾ ਅਰਧਹਿ ਉਰਧ ਨਿਬੇਰਾ ॥

    whatever is visible with the eyes is perishable,

  40. ਅਰਧਹਿ ਉਰਧਹ ਮੰਝਿ ਬਸੇਰਾ ॥

    therefore, always remember Him whom you cannot see with these eyes.

  41. ਅਰਧਹ ਛਾਡਿ ਉਰਧ ਜਉ ਆਵਾ ॥

    When one applies the key of the Guru’s word to the tenth door (mind),

  42. ਤਉ ਅਰਧਹਿ ਉਰਧ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਸੁਖ ਪਾਵਾ ॥੨੫॥

    only then one can realize that merciful God.

  43. ਨੰਨਾ ਨਿਸਿ ਦਿਨੁ ਨਿਰਖਤ ਜਾਈ ॥

    One whose days and nights pass waiting for the sight of God, waiting for His blessed vision that person’s eyes become glowing After waiting so long for Him when one does see the sight of one’s Beloved, then the one who was looking merges into the One who was looked for (God unites that lover with Himself).

  44. ਨਿਰਖਤ ਨੈਨ ਰਹੇ ਰਤਵਾਈ ॥

    When human soul attains supreme status and unites with God, the cycle of birth and death of that soul ends.

  45. ਨਿਰਖਤ ਨਿਰਖਤ ਜਬ ਜਾਇ ਪਾਵਾ ॥

    When leaving the lower spiritual state of love for Maya, human mind attains the supreme spritual state by meditation on Naam,

  46. ਤਬ ਲੇ ਨਿਰਖਹਿ ਨਿਰਖ ਮਿਲਾਵਾ ॥੨੬॥

    then one unites with God and attains eternal peace.

  47. ਪਪਾ ਅਪਰ ਪਾਰੁ ਨਹੀ ਪਾਵਾ ॥

    PAPPA: He is limitless; His limits cannot be found.

  48. ਪਰਮ ਜੋਤਿ ਸਿਉ ਪਰਚਉ ਲਾਵਾ ॥

    One whose days and nights pass waiting for the sight of God,

  49. ਪਾਂਚਉ ਇੰਦ੍ਰੀ ਨਿਗ੍ਰਹ ਕਰਈ ॥

    waiting for His blessed vision that person’s eyes become glowing

  50. ਪਾਪੁ ਪੁੰਨੁ ਦੋਊ ਨਿਰਵਰਈ ॥੨੭॥

    After waiting so long for Him when one does see the sight of one’s Beloved,

  51. ਫਫਾ ਬਿਨੁ ਫੂਲਹ ਫਲੁ ਹੋਈ ॥

    then the one who was looking merges into the One who was looked for (God unites that lover with Himself).

  52. ਤਾ ਫਲ ਫੰਕ ਲਖੈ ਜਉ ਕੋਈ ॥

    If one shuns self-conceit and meditates, then one gains the fruit of Naam.

  53. ਦੂਣਿ ਨ ਪਰਈ ਫੰਕ ਬਿਚਾਰੈ ॥

    If someone understands the worth of even a small slice of this fruit of Naam, then he doesn’t fall into the deep valleys (of births and deaths). Bwcause a slice of that fruit (Naam) completely destroys all the ego in one’s mind.

  54. ਤਾ ਫਲ ਫੰਕ ਸਭੈ ਤਨ ਫਾਰੈ ॥੨੮॥

    God is infinite, no one has found His limits.

  55. ਬਬਾ ਬਿੰਦਹਿ ਬਿੰਦ ਮਿਲਾਵਾ ॥

    One who is imbued with the love of the supreme Soul,

  56. ਬਿੰਦਹਿ ਬਿੰਦਿ ਨ ਬਿਛੁਰਨ ਪਾਵਾ ॥

    controls the five sensory organs,

  57. ਬੰਦਉ ਹੋਇ ਬੰਦਗੀ ਗਹੈ ॥

    and rises above both sin and virtue.
