  1. ਊਤਮੁ ਊਚੌ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਗੁਣ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਜਾਣਹਿ ਸੇਖ ॥

    that God is higher of the highest.

  2. ਨਾਰਦ ਮੁਨਿ ਜਨ ਸੁਕ ਬਿਆਸ ਜਸੁ ਗਾਵਤ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ॥

    No one knows the limits of His virtues, not even the highly respected muslim sheikh.

  3. ਰਸ ਗੀਧੇ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਬੀਧੇ ਭਗਤ ਰਚੇ ਭਗਵੰਤ ॥

    Naarad and many other saints including Sukhdev and Vyas sing God’s praises.

  4. ਮੋਹ ਮਾਨ ਭ੍ਰਮੁ ਬਿਨਸਿਓ ਪਾਈ ਸਰਨਿ ਦਇਆਲ ॥

    His devotees remain imbued with the essence of God’s Name, and attuned to Him they always remain immersed in His loving devotion.

  5. ਚਰਨ ਕਮਲ ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਬਸੇ ਦਰਸਨੁ ਦੇਖਿ ਨਿਹਾਲ ॥

    Those who have sought the refuge of the merciful God, their love for Maya (worldly riches), ego and doubt are destroyed.

  6. ਲਾਭੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਤੋਟਾ ਹਿਰੈ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥

    They, within whom is enshrined the love of God, feel delighted after realizing Him.

  7. ਖਾਟਿ ਖਜਾਨਾ ਗੁਣ ਨਿਧਿ ਹਰੇ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇ ॥੬॥

    By attuning to God in the holy congregation, high spiritual status is obtained and previously incurred spiritual loss due to vices is recovered. O’ Nanak, meditate on God’s Name and gather the treasure of His virtues

  8. ਸਲੋਕੁ ॥

  9. ਸੰਤ ਮੰਡਲ ਹਰਿ ਜਸੁ ਕਥਹਿ ਬੋਲਹਿ ਸਤਿ ਸੁਭਾਇ ॥

    The Saintly people in their congregation, sing the praises of God and talk about Him with true loving devotion.

  10. ਨਾਨਕ ਮਨੁ ਸੰਤੋਖੀਐ ਏਕਸੁ ਸਿਉ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥੭॥

    O’ Nanak, the mind remains contented by attuning to God.

  11. ਪਉੜੀ ॥

  12. ਸਪਤਮਿ ਸੰਚਹੁ ਨਾਮ ਧਨੁ ਟੂਟਿ ਨ ਜਾਹਿ ਭੰਡਾਰ ॥

    Seventh lunar day: Gather the wealth of God’s Name; this is a treasure which shall never be exhausted.

  13. ਸੰਤਸੰਗਤਿ ਮਹਿ ਪਾਈਐ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਪਾਰਾਵਾਰ ॥

    This treasure of God’s Name, of which there is no limit, is received only in the company of saints.

  14. ਆਪੁ ਤਜਹੁ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਭਜਹੁ ਸਰਨਿ ਪਰਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਇ ॥

    Renounce your self conceit, meditate on God and seek His refuge.

  15. ਦੂਖ ਹਰੈ ਭਵਜਲੁ ਤਰੈ ਮਨ ਚਿੰਦਿਆ ਫਲੁ ਪਾਇ ॥

    Your sorrows shall depart, you shall swim across the terrifying world-ocean of vices, and your mind’s desires shall be fulfilled.

  16. ਆਠ ਪਹਰ ਮਨਿ ਹਰਿ ਜਪੈ ਸਫਲੁ ਜਨਮੁ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ॥

    The one who always meditates on God’s Name with loving devotion, his human life becomes successful and approved in God’s Court.

  17. ਅੰਤਰਿ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਸਦਾ ਸੰਗਿ ਕਰਨੈਹਾਰੁ ਪਛਾਣੁ ॥

    Inwardly and outwardly, realize that the, the creato is with you.

  18. ਸੋ ਸਾਜਨੁ ਸੋ ਸਖਾ ਮੀਤੁ ਜੋ ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ਮਤਿ ਦੇਇ ॥

    That person is our real friend and well-wisher who teaches us to always meditate on God with love and devotion.

  19. ਨਾਨਕ ਤਿਸੁ ਬਲਿਹਾਰਣੈ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪੇਇ ॥੭॥

    O’ Nanak, I dedicate my life to the one who always meditates on God’s Name. |7|

  20. ਸਲੋਕੁ ॥

    Shalok:

  21. ਆਠ ਪਹਰ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਈਅਹਿ ਤਜੀਅਹਿ ਅਵਰਿ ਜੰਜਾਲ ॥

    If we renounce all worldly entanglements and always sing the praises of God, then, O’ Nanak, God becomes merciful and the fear of death doesn’t bother.|8

  22. ਜਮਕੰਕਰੁ ਜੋਹਿ ਨ ਸਕਈ ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਇਆਲ ॥੮॥

    The Minister of Death cannot even see that person, O Nanak, unto whom God is merciful. ||8||

    Eighth lunar day, the eight miraculous powers of the Siddhas, the nine treasures, all worldly objects, perfect intellect, delighted heart (like a lotus in bloom), eternal bliss, immaculate conduct, the infallible Mantra, all righteous deeds, sacred purifying baths, and the most sublime knowledge, are obtained by meditating on God’s Name in the company of the perfect Guru.

  25. ਸਗਲ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਪੂਰਨ ਬੁਧਿ ॥

    Eighth lunar day, the eight miraculous powers of the Siddhas, the nine treasures, all worldly objects, perfect intellect, delighted heart (like a lotus in bloom), eternal bliss, immaculate conduct, the infallible Mantra, all righteous deeds, sacred purifying baths, and the most sublime knowledge, are obtained by meditating on God’s Name in the company of the perfect Guru.

  26. ਕਵਲ ਪ੍ਰਗਾਸ ਸਦਾ ਆਨੰਦ ॥

  31. ਜਪਿ ਤਰੀਐ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮ ਹਰਿ ਰੰਗਿ ॥੮॥

    O’ Nanak, we swim across the worldly ocean of vices when imbued with God’s love and meditating on His Name.

  32. ਸਲੋਕੁ ॥

  33. ਨਾਰਾਇਣੁ ਨਹ ਸਿਮਰਿਓ ਮੋਹਿਓ ਸੁਆਦ ਬਿਕਾਰ ॥

    The one who has never meditated on God, remains enticed by the relishes of worldly wealth and vices.

  34. ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮਿ ਬਿਸਾਰਿਐ ਨਰਕ ਸੁਰਗ ਅਵਤਾਰ ॥੯॥

    O’ Nanak, forsaking God’s Name, one keeps being born again and again to go through hell and heaven (the pain and pleasure of life).

  35. ਪਉੜੀ ॥

    Pauree:

  36. ਨਉਮੀ ਨਵੇ ਛਿਦ੍ਰ ਅਪਵੀਤ ॥

    The ninth lunar day: the nine openings of the body (eyes, ears, nostrils,etc.) of those become defiled, who do not meditate on God’s Name, but indulge in uncivilized evil acts.

  37. ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਜਪਹਿ ਕਰਤ ਬਿਪਰੀਤਿ ॥

    The ninth lunar day: the nine openings of the body (eyes, ears, nostrils,etc.) of those become defiled, who do not meditate on God’s Name, but indulge in uncivilized evil acts.

  38. ਪਰ ਤ੍ਰਿਅ ਰਮਹਿ ਬਕਹਿ ਸਾਧ ਨਿੰਦ ॥

    They commit adultery, slander the Saints, and do not listen to even a tiny bit of God’s Praise.

  39. ਕਰਨ ਨ ਸੁਨਹੀ ਹਰਿ ਜਸੁ ਬਿੰਦ ॥

  40. ਹਿਰਹਿ ਪਰ ਦਰਬੁ ਉਦਰ ਕੈ ਤਾਈ ॥

    They steal wealth from others for the sake of their own survival, still the fire of their desire is not quenched and their greed is not satiated.

  41. ਅਗਨਿ ਨ ਨਿਵਰੈ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਨ ਬੁਝਾਈ ॥

  42. ਹਰਿ ਸੇਵਾ ਬਿਨੁ ਏਹ ਫਲ ਲਾਗੇ ॥

    Such are the consequences of not remembering God with loving devotion.

  43. ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਬਿਸਰਤ ਮਰਿ ਜਮਹਿ ਅਭਾਗੇ ॥੯॥

    O’ Nanak, by forsaking God, these unfortunate people keep suffering in the cycles of birth and death.

  44. ਸਲੋਕੁ ॥

  45. ਦਸ ਦਿਸ ਖੋਜਤ ਮੈ ਫਿਰਿਓ ਜਤ ਦੇਖਉ ਤਤ ਸੋਇ ॥

    I have wandered, searching in all the ten directions, wherever I look I see God, but, O’ Nanak, the mind only comes under control when one is blessed with the kindness of the perfect God.

  46. ਮਨੁ ਬਸਿ ਆਵੈ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਜੇ ਪੂਰਨ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਹੋਇ ॥੧੦॥

    The mind comes to be controlled, O Nanak, if He grants His Perfect Grace. ||10||

  48. ਦਸਮੀ ਦਸ ਦੁਆਰ ਬਸਿ ਕੀਨੇ ॥

    The tenth lunar day: when one controls all the ten doors of the body (sense organs-ears, eyes, nostrils, mouth, sensual organs, and brain), and meditates on God’s Name, the mind achieves contentment.

  49. ਮਨਿ ਸੰਤੋਖੁ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਿ ਲੀਨੇ ॥

    The tenth lunar day: when one controls all the ten doors of the body (sense organs-ears, eyes, nostrils, mouth, sensual organs, and brain), and meditates on God’s Name, the mind achieves contentment.

  50. ਕਰਨੀ ਸੁਨੀਐ ਜਸੁ ਗੋਪਾਲ ॥

    Then such a person listens to God’s praises, and sees the sight of the kind Saint-Guru, sings the praises of infinite God, and remembers the perfect God with love and devotion,

  51. ਨੈਨੀ ਪੇਖਤ ਸਾਧ ਦਇਆਲ ॥

    Then such a person listens to God’s praises, and sees the sight of the kind Saint-Guru, sings the praises of infinite God, and remembers the perfect God with love and devotion,

  52. ਰਸਨਾ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਵੈ ਬੇਅੰਤ ॥
