  1. ਨਾਨਕ ਕੈ ਮਨਿ ਇਹੁ ਅਨਰਾਉ ॥੧॥

    This is the yearning of Nanak’s mind.

  2. ਮਨਸਾ ਪੂਰਨ ਸਰਨਾ ਜੋਗ ॥

    God is capable of fulfilling our wishes and providing refuge.

  3. ਜੋ ਕਰਿ ਪਾਇਆ ਸੋਈ ਹੋਗੁ ॥

    Whatever God has inscribed in one’s destiny, is what takes place.

  4. ਹਰਨ ਭਰਨ ਜਾ ਕਾ ਨੇਤ੍ਰ ਫੋਰੁ ॥

    God can create or destroy the universe inthe blink of an eye;

  5. ਤਿਸ ਕਾ ਮੰਤ੍ਰੁ ਨ ਜਾਨੈ ਹੋਰੁ ॥

    No one other than Him, knows the mantra.

  6. ਅਨਦ ਰੂਪ ਮੰਗਲ ਸਦ ਜਾ ਕੈ ॥

    is the embodiment of everlasting bliss and joy,

  7. ਸਰਬ ਥੋਕ ਸੁਨੀਅਹਿ ਘਰਿ ਤਾ ਕੈ ॥

    and all gifts are heard to be in His possession.

  8. ਰਾਜ ਮਹਿ ਰਾਜੁ ਜੋਗ ਮਹਿ ਜੋਗੀ ॥

    Among kings, He is the greatest King;

  9. ਤਪ ਮਹਿ ਤਪੀਸਰੁ ਗ੍ਰਿਹਸਤ ਮਹਿ ਭੋਗੀ ॥

    among yogis, He is the holiest Yogi.

  10. ਧਿਆਇ ਧਿਆਇ ਭਗਤਹ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥

    Among ascetics, He is the highest Ascetic;

  11. ਨਾਨਕ ਤਿਸੁ ਪੁਰਖ ਕਾ ਕਿਨੈ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੨॥

    among householders, He is the indulging householder.

  12. ਜਾ ਕੀ ਲੀਲਾ ਕੀ ਮਿਤਿ ਨਾਹਿ ॥

    By continuous meditation on Him, His devotees have found peace.

  13. ਸਗਲ ਦੇਵ ਹਾਰੇ ਅਵਗਾਹਿ ॥

    O’ Nanak, no one has found the limits of that Supreme Being.

  14. ਪਿਤਾ ਕਾ ਜਨਮੁ ਕਿ ਜਾਨੈ ਪੂਤੁ ॥

    There is no limit to His worldly play,

  15. ਸਗਲ ਪਰੋਈ ਅਪੁਨੈ ਸੂਤਿ ॥

    all the angels have grown weary of searching for Him.

  16. ਸੁਮਤਿ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਧਿਆਨੁ ਜਿਨ ਦੇਇ ॥ ਜਨ ਦਾਸ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਵਹਿ ਸੇਇ ॥

    Just as a son cannot know the secret of the birth of his father,

  17. ਤਿਹੁ ਗੁਣ ਮਹਿ ਜਾ ਕਉ ਭਰਮਾਏ ॥

    similarly the creation cannot know about the birth of its Creator.

  18. ਜਨਮਿ ਮਰੈ ਫਿਰਿ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਏ ॥

    He has bound the entire creation under His Law like the beads strung in a rosary.

  19. ਊਚ ਨੀਚ ਤਿਸ ਕੇ ਅਸਥਾਨ ॥

    The devotees upon whom He bestows good sense, spiritual wisdom and inclination to meditate,

  20. ਜੈਸਾ ਜਨਾਵੈ ਤੈਸਾ ਨਾਨਕ ਜਾਨ ॥੩॥

    those humble devotees remember Him with love and devotion.

  21. ਨਾਨਾ ਰੂਪ ਨਾਨਾ ਜਾ ਕੇ ਰੰਗ ॥

    The one whom He leads astray in the three impulses (vice, virtue and power),

  22. ਨਾਨਾ ਭੇਖ ਕਰਹਿ ਇਕ ਰੰਗ ॥

    keeps wandering in the cycles of birth and death.

  23. ਨਾਨਾ ਬਿਧਿ ਕੀਨੋ ਬਿਸਥਾਰੁ ॥

    God dwells in all these high and low spiritual states of mind.

  24. ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਅਬਿਨਾਸੀ ਏਕੰਕਾਰੁ ॥

    O’ Nanak, Whatever intellect God gives one, heknows Him accordingly.

  25. ਨਾਨਾ ਚਲਿਤ ਕਰੇ ਖਿਨ ਮਾਹਿ ॥

    Many are His forms;

  26. ਪੂਰਿ ਰਹਿਓ ਪੂਰਨੁ ਸਭ ਠਾਇ ॥

    many are His colors.

  27. ਨਾਨਾ ਬਿਧਿ ਕਰਿ ਬਨਤ ਬਨਾਈ ॥

    yet, He is only One of its kind.

  28. ਅਪਨੀ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਆਪੇ ਪਾਈ ॥

    In numerous ways He has expanded this universe,

  29. ਸਭ ਘਟ ਤਿਸ ਕੇ ਸਭ ਤਿਸ ਕੇ ਠਾਉ ॥

    but still, He is eternal and the only One Creator.

  30. ਜਪਿ ਜਪਿ ਜੀਵੈ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਉ ॥੪॥

    He performs His many plays in an instant.

  31. ਨਾਮ ਕੇ ਧਾਰੇ ਸਗਲੇ ਜੰਤ ॥

    the Perfect God is pervading all places.

  32. ਨਾਮ ਕੇ ਧਾਰੇ ਖੰਡ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੰਡ ॥

    In so many ways, He has created the creation,

  33. ਨਾਮ ਕੇ ਧਾਰੇ ਸਿਮ੍ਰਿਤਿ ਬੇਦ ਪੁਰਾਨ ॥

    and He alone knows His worth.

  34. ਨਾਮ ਕੇ ਧਾਰੇ ਸੁਨਨ ਗਿਆਨ ਧਿਆਨ ॥

    All beings are His,

  35. ਨਾਮ ਕੇ ਧਾਰੇ ਆਗਾਸ ਪਾਤਾਲ ॥

    and all places are His and all the creation belongs to Him.

  36. ਨਾਮ ਕੇ ਧਾਰੇ ਸਗਲ ਆਕਾਰ ॥

    O’ Nanak, His devotee lives meditating on God’s Name.

  37. ਨਾਮ ਕੇ ਧਾਰੇ ਪੁਰੀਆ ਸਭ ਭਵਨ ॥

    Naam is the Support of all creatures.

  38. ਨਾਮ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਉਧਰੇ ਸੁਨਿ ਸ੍ਰਵਨ ॥

    Naam is the Support of the earth and solar systems.

  39. ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਜਿਸੁ ਆਪਨੈ ਨਾਮਿ ਲਾਏ ॥

    Naam is the basis of (Hindu scriptures), the Simritis, Vedas and Puranas.

  40. ਨਾਨਕ ਚਉਥੇ ਪਦ ਮਹਿ ਸੋ ਜਨੁ ਗਤਿ ਪਾਏ ॥੫॥

    With the support of Naam we hear about divine knowledge and meditation.

  41. ਰੂਪੁ ਸਤਿ ਜਾ ਕਾ ਸਤਿ ਅਸਥਾਨੁ ॥

    Naam is the Support of the skies and the nether regions.

  42. ਪੁਰਖੁ ਸਤਿ ਕੇਵਲ ਪਰਧਾਨੁ ॥

    Naam is the Support of all bodies (all forms of life).

  43. ਕਰਤੂਤਿ ਸਤਿ ਸਤਿ ਜਾ ਕੀ ਬਾਣੀ ॥

    Naam is the Support of all the worlds and realms.

  44. ਸਤਿ ਪੁਰਖ ਸਭ ਮਾਹਿ ਸਮਾਣੀ ॥

    By meditating and listening Name, many have been saved from vices.

  45. ਸਤਿ ਕਰਮੁ ਜਾ ਕੀ ਰਚਨਾ ਸਤਿ ॥

    Bestowing His grace, whom God bless with Naam,

  46. ਮੂਲੁ ਸਤਿ ਸਤਿ ਉਤਪਤਿ ॥

    O’ Nanak, in the fourth stage of divine bliss, that humble devotee reaches the higher spiritual state.

  47. ਸਤਿ ਕਰਣੀ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਨਿਰਮਲੀ ॥

    God, whose form is eternal and whose seat of power is eternal,

  48. ਜਿਸਹਿ ਬੁਝਾਏ ਤਿਸਹਿ ਸਭ ਭਲੀ ॥

    only that all-pervading Eternal Being is supreme.

  49. ਸਤਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕਾ ਸੁਖਦਾਈ ॥

    He whose deeds are eternal and whose word is true,

  50. ਬਿਸ੍ਵਾਸੁ ਸਤਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਪਾਈ ॥੬॥

    that eternal God is pervading in all.

  51. ਸਤਿ ਬਚਨ ਸਾਧੂ ਉਪਦੇਸ ॥

    His creation is true and true are His actions.

  52. ਸਤਿ ਤੇ ਜਨ ਜਾ ਕੈ ਰਿਦੈ ਪ੍ਰਵੇਸ ॥

    His origin is true, and true is what originates from it.

  53. ਸਤਿ ਨਿਰਤਿ ਬੂਝੈ ਜੇ ਕੋਇ ॥

    True is His Will, the purest of the pure.

  54. ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਤ ਤਾ ਕੀ ਗਤਿ ਹੋਇ ॥

    All goes well for him whom He enables to understand His Will

  55. ਆਪਿ ਸਤਿ ਕੀਆ ਸਭੁ ਸਤਿ ॥

    The True Name of God is the Giver of peace.

  56. ਆਪੇ ਜਾਨੈ ਅਪਨੀ ਮਿਤਿ ਗਤਿ ॥

    O’ Nanak, this faith is received only from the Guru.
